Maryland extends Mike Locksley through 2027: What is the state of the program?

Maryland coach Mike Locksley agreed to a new contract with the school that will run through 2027, the school announced Friday. Here’s what you need to know:

  • Locksley has coached the Terrapins since 2019, compiling a 21–28 record.
  • Maryland has finished with winning seasons the last two years, winning bowl games each season. The Terrapins hadn’t won bowl games in consecutive seasons since 2002-2003.
  • Per a university release, Locksley’s new contract includes incentives that could extend the contract an additional year.
  • Locksley and the school agreed to a five-year extension in 2022.

The Athletic’s instant analysis:

What’s the state of the program?

Locksley has brought consistency to College Park for the first time in a decade, with 7-6 and 8-5 records over the last two years in a difficult Big Ten East. The 2023 offense should be explosive once again behind quarterback Taulia Tagovailoa. He’s the school’s all-time leader in passing yards, completions, passing touchdowns and 300-yard games, also setting the school’s single-season records in those categories in 2021.

Backstory

Maryland went 8-5 in 2022, its winningest season since 2010.

Under Locksley, the team has picked up wins over No. 21 Syracuse in 2019 and No. 23 NC State in 2022.

In March, the Terrapins hired Gattis as offensive coordinator. He worked alongside Locksley at Alabama in 2018 before joining Michigan’s staff from 2019 to 2021, where he won the Broyles Award as the top college assistant in 2021.

Locksley also won the Broyles Award in 2018 as offensive coordinator at Alabama.
